Collaborative Outreach –
Recruitment, Retention & Scholarships

Recruitment

The ten OICF member colleges and universities are partnering with regional community service organization to provide opportunities for students/parents from underrepresented minority groups to interact with staff and students from the OICF institutions at special events and campus tours.

College Fairs

 

Spring 2006 events included: OICF college fairs on 3/29/06 for students within the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs; and 4/26/06 for students within the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde.

Fall 2005 events included: OICF college fair on 11/16/05 for students from Self Enhancement Inc. and the Oregon Council for Hispanic Advancement.

Campus Tours

Fall 2006 Events: Senior high Students from Self Enhancement Inc. and the Oregon Council for Hispanic Advancement will tour OICF campuses on November 1 and November 9.

Spring 2007 Events: Junior high Students from Self Enhancement Inc. and the Oregon Council for Hispanic Advancement will tour OICF campuses in the spring of 2007. Specific dates coming soon.

Retention

A key method for retaining first-year students is to provide an opportunity for these students to build relationships and connectivity to the campus community is through peer-to-peer (or student-to-student) mentoring.  This can be especially useful for students from underrepresented populations, including students of color and first generation students.

OICF members will apply for peer-to-peer mentoring program funding for the 2006-07 academic year via OICF financial partners.

Scholarships

The OICF has a base goal of raising $500,000 through FY2007 for scholarships that will follow students of diversity throughout their academic careers (i.e. freshman through senior year).

Fifty diversity scholarships were awarded to the OICF colleges in June 2006 for used in the 2006-07 academic year.
